There was a coach named Red Auerback. He wasnt just a coach, he basically helped invent modern team basketball.
Before the Celtics, many teams relied heavily on one scorer. Auerbach emphasized:
- Fast Breaks
- Ball Movement
- Deep Benches
- Conditioning
- Defense-First Basketball
Coach Auerbach was also famous for lighting a victory cigar before games ended once he knew Boston had won, a move opponents hated.
Auerbach also broke racial barriers:
- He drafted the first Black player selected in the NBA draft, Chuch Cooper.
- He started the league's first all-Black starting lineup in 1964.
- He hired Bill Russell as the first Black head coach in major American pro sports.
That made the Celtics one of the most socially porgressive teams of the era.
